Description

Might & Magic Book One: Secret of the Inner Sanctum definitely isn’t the first party-based RPG in computer history. But by the time of its release in 1986, it could’ve been wholeheartedly considered as the most extensive one. The vast world of Varn welcomes you to free-roam its cities, dungeons, castles, woods, mountains, deserts, and even glaciers. Lots of dangers and challenges await on the way, though: get ready to win battles, solve puzzles, rack your brains over riddles, and spend a lot of time on quests (beware of the unsolvable one). Oh, and don’t forget to take a pencil—you’ll have to draw your own maps.

Book One is not the game that leads the player by hand. It lets you explore, discover, and suffer on your own. Random encounters, frequent traps, mind-boggling mazes, and mere hints on what to do next. At least the game allows to save your progress, so don’t worry: you still have the chance to find the Inner Sanctum and rid the world of Varn from its menacing tyrant.

Future games in the series are going to improve visuals, enrich game mechanics, and expand the story. But it is the Might & Magic Book One: Secret of the Inner Sanctum that paved the way for one of the most beloved RPG franchises of the ‘90s and defined the core features of Might & Magic games, which enriched the series with unique charm and distinguished it from the rest of ‘blobbers’.
