In the kingdom of Khanduras, in the town of Tristram, an ancient evil has awakened…

Diablo takes place in the town of Tristram and the catacombs below its cathedral.  You play as one of three heroes – the physically capable Warrior, the ranged death-dealer Rogue, or the enigmatic Sorcerer – traversing sixteen procedurally generated dungeon levels to reach the titular Diablo, Lord of Terror, and end his evil reign before it has a chance to begin.

While Diablo II would go on to improve upon the formula and find more mainstream recognition, this first entry nevertheless laid the foundation upon which the entire series was built: movement controlled mostly by point-and-click, randomly generated dungeon levels and loot, and the white-normal/blue-magic/gold-rare equipment rarity and color system as examples.
